Every day, except for one, I
wore my sneakers because I was on my feet for about 3 hours. The one day I
didn’t wear my sneakers was the day I wore my brown sandals to match my
earrings. I really like these sandals because they go with just about all the
outfits in my closet. The only thing is if I wear them for too long they hurt
my feet. They are made of plastic and they offer no support for my feet at all.
I figured even though they hurt my feet wouldn’t really hurt until I
get home.
Well, I was wrong! It didn't
take long for my feet to start hurting and when it was time to go home I
couldn't stand it any longer and took them off on my way to the car! My feet
were red and sore! When I woke up the next morning they were still sore! I
complained to my mom about my bad decision and asked myself "Why am I still
wearing these shoes?!"
That got me to thinking of how we can
force ourselves into wearing shoes we are not supposed to wear. Not physical
shoes, but what God has called us to do – our purpose in life.
“For we are His
workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus
[reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good
works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so
that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made
ready for us].” Ephesians 2:10
There are some things I have tried
to do that I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do them or knew that
the Lord didn't want me to do them. And in the end I either did a bad job, had
a huge amount of stress that I brought upon myself or just failed! I see
many other people doing what they want to do, but not what the Lord
wants for them and it breaks my heart. While they might be doing
something good and that is helpful
to others, if they did what the Lord wanted it would be great!
If we volunteer at a soup kitchen,
but brush off working with kids at camps, after school programs, daycare, etc. where
God is saying our call is, then we are putting on shoes that aren’t ours to
wear. If we date this guy/girl is attractive and is an amazing person, but God
says they are not the right spouse for us then we are putting on shoes that
aren't ours, because our partner in life is designed to walk in our call
with us.
Whatever we force
ourselves to wear looks great at first, but can lead to bad consequences later
that have an impact not only on us but on others that could have been
avoided.
While the shoes the
Lord gives you may not be as flashy as your friends, they are your ministry and
are beautiful! They may not match your earrings :) but they support you and
help keep you focused on the work at hand.
Don't put yourself in a position to
question “why am I wearing these shoes, they hurt?! If you are wearing
someone else’s shoes take them off, no matter how humbling it may be, and put
on those "tennis shoes." As you walk with the Lord in the shoes He’s designed just for you, you will see how beautifully your work goes and
there won't be any sore feet at the end of the day!
