I have asked that question a couple of times during my walk with the Lord. Before those moments I never thought I would ever not know what to do because I had the Lord leading me. I never thought there would be times I would question where I was going in life.
At one such time I was going to church every chance I could get, doing good deeds like volunteering and helping others, but I knew the Lord had more for me and I wasn't where I needed to be. I thought I was growing in my relationship with the Lord, but I really was just coasting because I was comfortable where I was and felt like I was doing "enough." I kept asking the Lord, "What do I do now? What direction am I supposed to go!"
After staying in this stagnate state for far too long wondering why God wasn't talking to me I went to my mom and asked her why I wasn't hearing from God! She simply said, "Are you doing the last thing He told you to do?"
Whoa! That was like a punch to the face. I was not doing the last thing He told me to do. I kept putting those things off saying I'd do them when I had better equipment and more time. I was always saying I didn't have enough time when in truth I was wasting my time on things I didn't have to do!
I had been seeking the Lord and He answered me, but I didn't act in obedience. Then after I wasn't seeing a change in my life I kept asking Him what to do but I couldn't hear Him anymore. He had already told me what to do so why would He keep repeating Himself if His stubborn child wasn't getting it!
Does any of this sound like you? If you can't hear the Lord anymore and are frustrated that your life is still going the same way or is worse now ask yourself "Am I doing what the Lord told me to do?" If you are not, well, you have the answer to your questions! Ask the Lord to forgive you for not listening to Him then get back to doing the last thing He told you to do until He gives you new orders.
Go start that church/charity group. Start writing that book. Write and record the songs He's given you. You may not be completely ready to record a CD but you will have everything ready. Is your project big and intimidating? Gather the research you need and do what you can for now. Ask Abba Father to put the right people in your path to help you and see your project through. Remember you aren't in this alone, the Holy Spirit is there to guide you when you are walking in obedience!
I rejoice in you going back to the work the Lord has for you. Keep at it and you will see that you will start to hear Abba Father speaking to you on a regular basis again, and He will encourage you to keep going and finish the work!

26 But the [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

11 So now finish this, so that your eagerness in desiring it may be equaled by your completion of it, according to your ability. 12 For if the eagerness [to give] is there, it is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. 2 Cor 1:11-12
It is better to finish something
than to start it.
It is better to be gentle and patient
than to be proud and impatient. Ecclesiastes 7:8
