What did you just say?!

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words. Proverbs 18:21

Every moment of every day we have the power to speak life or death. We have the power to build up or tear down. If you look back on your day what is it that you spoke; life or death?

"Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me."

Most of us have heard this saying and we know how wrong it is! Even if we can't remember the full memory we can still remember the words someone said in that moment that hurt us.
We may not remember a person's name many years later; however we can remember how they cussed someone out.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, God takes our words seriously! Let's look at a few verses:

Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Matthew 12:36
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

1 Peter 3:10
For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;

These are just a few of the many verses in the Bible I found speaking on our words and the power of our tongue. I hear too many Christians letting cuss words slip, making inappropriate jokes, speaking hatefully and keeping themselves and others bound using their words. If you talk about your back/joints being old and broke down that isn't speaking life into your body. If you say that you or someone else is dumb that isn't speaking life into you/them.

Church, we need to stop speaking like the world and speak like our Father! If the world doesn't know we are God's by our words alone something is wrong.
If we think we need to speak like the world for them to be comfortable enough to listen to us then something is wrong.

There is enough darkness in the world and around us each day; don't open the door and let darkness into your land by speaking carelessly or by speaking death. Let us speak life and our lights will shine all the brighter as the world sees that there IS something different about us. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to speak through us and draw others in.

Be blessed, beloveds!

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!
Psalm 141:3
